Born in Manchester on May 9, , a young Martin grew up in Cheshire. He moved to London as a teenager, to study at the prestigious London School of Economics. He graduated with a degree in Government and Law, and then took a job in the City of London, where he worked in public relations and dabbled in stand-up comedy in his spare time. Martin then switched his career, studying for a diploma in broadcast journalism at Cardiff University.
As the last millennium ended, he moved to the Simply Money channel, which does not exist anymore, but created the "Money Saving Expert".
