The death of Governor Yakowa brought grief and sadness not only to Kaduna State citizens but to all lovers of peace and peaceful coexistence all over the country. In his two and a half years as governor of a very volatile state, Yakowa stamped his personal virtues of humility, tolerance and accommodation to politics and governance in Kaduna State with very admirable results.

Even before his rise to the governorship two and a half years ago, he had earned for himself a stellar record of selfless service to the country at the state and federal levels. He graduated with a B. Sc Social Sciences in June Stephen Shekari. Inevitably, the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Yakowa, Azazi and the other patriotic Nigerians has thrown up a welter of issues and controversies.

Some people have asked why the Navy should be flying guests at the private event of a presidential aide. Then also, this was the second helicopter crash and the fourth fatal air accident in Nigeria this year alone. Questions are therefore being asked anew about the safety of Nigerian skies and aircraft. The Nigeria Navy has already denied allegations being made that the crashed Agusta helicopter was either a refurbished one or that it was poorly maintained.

It is therefore very important to investigate the cause of this crash and to make the findings available to the public as soon as possible. We are happy to note that President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered an investigation into the causes of this crash. The Nigeria Navy also announced that it will conduct its own probe, as did the Senate of the Federal Republic.

The Nigeria Governors Forum also pledged to nominate a consultant to represent it in the investigations.
